You can usually find frozen cherries in the frozen fruit section of the supermarket, cherries are packed full of antioxidants which help fight free-radicals, are naturally low in calories, high in vitamin C and have a rich flavour and natural sweetness. Cherries contain five times more melatonin than strawberries and blackberries. Melatonin is a hormone known to improve quality of sleep and relieve anxiety.
Why is Cacao so popular?
For smoothies and other raw recipes, we like to use raw cacao powder, not Dutch cacao as the raw powder has more nutrients.
Cacao is an excellent source of magnesium, iron, calcium and has 40 times the antioxidants as blueberries. Cacao has a very high iron content, with 7.3mg per 100g – this is non-heme iron so consuming it with vitamin C from the Cherries will help absorption.
How to get a smoothie creamy…
Coconut adds a decedent creamy texture to the smoothie and is rich in healthy fats. Coconuts are also rich in copper, selenium and manganese and a great source of dietary fibre. I add rose water to this smoothie to enhance the flavour of the cherries to mimic the flavour of kirsch. Both rose water and cocoa are said to improve the mood when ingested, so this is a great feel-good shake.
What sweetners should I use?
Medjool dates are an excellent option for a natural sweetener, just half a date adds a rich, caramel-like sweetness. They are good for intestinal health and full of minerals which can help strengthen bones.
- 2 tbs Hemp Protein
- 1 tsp Rose Water
- 1 ½ cups Frozen Cherry
- 2 tbs Cacao
- 3 tbs Shredded Coconut
- 1 cup Coconut Drinking Milk
- Toasted Coconut Chips, nuts and chia seeds to garnish
- Medjool date or desired sweetener (to taste)
- Blend together all ingredients
- Add sweetener to taste
- Garnish with coconut chips and serve immediately or freeze in a plastic/shatterproof bottle for later consumption
- For a less rich smoothie, try blending in six ice cubes or using water instead of Coconut Milk
